From the dramatically varied landscapes of the Highlands and the Lowlands, the West Coast and the east, photographer Alistair Devine has captured stunning images that showcase the natural wonders of his native land. A photographer for all seasons, the vagaries of Scotland’s weather meant that he and his models and photographic assistant Indre Hilara Bylaite had to brave whatever the fickle seasons brought – all to be in the right place, at the right moment. It was an exercise sometimes fraught with challenges that included real physical danger, but all successfully overcome. Understandably, bearing in mind the popularity of the Harry Potter series of films, crowds of excited visitors posed difficulties for the shot for January’s picture of the Glenfinnan Viaduct, featured in the films as it is traversed by the Hogwarts Express. Crowds of a different kind, in this case in the form of late-night revellers, could have seriously interfered with his picture for February in Glasgow’s George Square. Taking it on a busy weekend night was out of the question, so he settled for about 1 am. on a Monday night. With slight understatement he describes the shoot for November’s picture at Falls of Falloch as “quite tricky.” He had to risk life and limb by balancing precariously on an unstable ledge, supported only by a belt looped around his waist and grimly held onto at one end by Indre. Never work with animals and children, is one show business piece of advice, but Alistair was more than happy to work with not only a horse on Ayr Beach for the April picture but also a dog for the October picture in Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Park. “Grayson the Great Dane was a true professional,” he says. “A really magnificent dog.” No less professional was Alistair’s assistant Indre and his hardy team of twelve models. “Indre”, he says, “is a fantastic assistant to work with, an excellent photographer in her own right and a terrific people person – which is paramount in photography.” No less fulsome in his praise of the models, he says: “The guys are a real joy to work with.
